The event will mark the promotion's third visit to Abu Dhabi, and first since UFC Fight Night: Nogueira vs. Nelson in April of 2014.

A UFC Lightweight Championship title unification bout between current champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and interim champion Dustin Poirier has been slated to serve as the event's headliner

The “Magic Man” is back and set to return in September.

After an impressive UFC debut, Don Madge (7-3-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) will take on Magomed Mustafaev (15-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC) in a lightweight bout at UFC 242, a person with knowledge of the booking told MMA Junkie on Friday. The person asked to remain anonymous since the UFC has not yet made an official announcement.

UFC 242 takes place Sept. 7 at The Arena at Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and UFC Fight Pass/ESPN+.

South African prospect Madge has been itching for a fight since his explosive head-kick knockout of Te Edwards this past in October at UFC Fight Night 138, which was his promotional debut. The win was his fifth straight, all of which have come by stoppage, including four knockouts.

After a layoff of nearly two and a half years, Mustafaev returned in his home country of Russia with a “Performance of the Night” TKO finish over Rafael Fiziev at UFC on ESPN+ 7 in April. Mustafaev landed a spinning kick to the body and followed it up with a barrage of punches to get the win in less than 90 seconds. He hadn’t fought since a submission loss to Kevin Lee in November 2016.

With the addition, the UFC 242 lineup now includes:

Champ Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. interim champ Dustin Poirier – for lightweight title
    Shamil Abdurakhimov vs. Curtis Blaydes
    Islam Makhachev vs. Davi Ramos
    Diego Ferreira vs. Mairbek Taisumov
    Belal Muhammad vs. Takashi Sato
    Ottman Azaitar vs. Teemu Packalen
    Bruno Silva vs. Khalid Taha
    Muslim Salikhov vs. Nordine Taleb
    Don Madge vs. Magomed Mustafaev

Some really good matchmaking on this card, but it really needs another marquee fight or two considering that it's a ppv

The UFC is doubling-down on the return of 155lb champion Khabib Nurmagomedov as the promotion announces that they will hold a press conference in London to promote the Russian's upcoming title defense against Dustin Poirier.

The UFC lightweight champion hasn't competed in the octagon since an ill-tempered contest with former champ Conor McGregor in Las Vegas last October.

The aftermath of his fourth-round submission victory resulted in Nurmagomedov receiving a prolonged suspension for his part in the post-fight melee, which also led to suspensions levied upon McGregor, as well as several of the Russian's teammates.

His upcoming return to action, against interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier in Abu Dhabi in September, is among the year's most anticipated fights and, as such, the UFC has decided to add to the bout's international flavor by holding a press conference in the English capital to promote the tussle

The event, which is open to the media only, will take place on June 12 as the pair will meet for the first time with the world's MMA media watching.

This extra level of promotion is reserved by the UFC for only their most high-profile events, and is reminiscent of the world press tour arranged to promote McGregor's title challenge against Jose Aldo several years ago.

The Irishman also participated in international press events, one of which was in London, ahead of his boxing match with Floyd Mayweather in August 2017.

Poirer, a veteran of 22 bouts inside the UFC cage, earned his shot at the title by defeating featherweight king Max Holloway to claim the interim lightweight title in April. It cleared a path to the all-conquering Nurmagomedov, who remains undefeated at 27-0.

UFC 242 marks the beginning of a partnership between the UFC and the emirate’s Department of Culture and Tourism, a deal which will see the organization hold several world title bouts in the region through the next five years.

The event is scheduled to take place on September 7 at The Arena, Yas Island in Abu Dhabi.
